Who is Archbishop Dmitri

Archbishop Dmitri was a native of Texas, born in Teague in 1923. He served his country in WWII in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre. He received a Master’s Degree in Spanish in 1949 from Southern Methodist University and later taught Spanish and Spanish Literature for a number of years there at Southern Methodist University. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1954.

On June 22, 1969 he was consecrated a bishop and given the title, Bishop of Berkeley, serving as an assistant to Archbishop John (Shakhovskoy) of San Francisco.

In 1971 he was elected as Bishop of the Hartford and New England. Then in 1978 he was elected Bishop of the newly formed Diocese of the South. He retired as Bishop of the South on March 31, 2009.

Archbishop Dmitri wrote a number of commentaries on books of the New Testament, specifically the Gospel according to John, the Epistle of Paul to the Romans, the Epistle of James, the Epistle to the Hebrews, and three books on the Miracle of Christ, the Parables of Christ, and the Sermon on the Mount.

Archbishop Dmitri spoke always with respect of his Baptist heritage; from it he brings a zeal for mission, for calling people to faith in Jesus Christ.

Surrounded by his beloved flock, Archbishop Dmitri reposed in the Lord on August 28th, 2011.

Restland Memorial Park

He was buried at Restland Memorial Park in the beautiful Orthodox Christian Garden section. This location has become a very dear spot for the Orthodox faithful of North Texas.
