Coronavirus — February 19th, 2020 Facts

▶️ Chinese study finds novel coronavirus more contagious than SARS and MERS. China’s National Health Commission reported an additional 114 deaths, and 394 new confirmed cases as of Feb. 19.

▶️ The novel coronavirus has now killed more than 2,100 people, with eight deaths reported outside of mainland China. It has infected more than 76,000 people, with over 1,000 cases outside mainland China.

▶️ Two passengers from the Diamond Princess cruise ship die, Japanese media report. The Diamond Princess has been docked at Yokohama near Tokyo since Feb. 3, with an initial 3,700 passengers, and more than 620 have since been found infected.

▶️ Beijing introduced new measures that would allow Hubei to remove those in the “clinically diagnosed” category.

▶️ The Chinese government announced today that it would revoke the press credentials of three Wall Street Journal reporters, the largest such expulsion of overseas media from the country in recent years. Chinese officials say the expulsion was due to an opinion piece the Wall Street Journal published earlier this month, entitled “China is the real sick man of Asia.” It criticized China’s initial reaction to the coronavirus epidemic and hypothesized what effect the outbreak might have on the country’s economy and political system.
